Kent Brushes

Suitsupply THREE-PIECE SAND COTTON/LINEN SUIT

Not every best thing in the world have to be expensive. Although back in history probably was quite a lot. Did you know that hairbrushes belong to one of the oldest man-made objects? Obviously, since the very beginning, they were used to keep head free from pests. They were made from bone, wood or shells.

But let’s skip a few centuries. In ancient Egypt or other multiple rich places around the world, it was presented as a symbol of wealth reserved for those who could afford to buy them. As to create such hairbrush was extremely challenging.

Let’s skip a few centuries again. In 1777 William Kent founded Kent Brushes in Hertfordshire, England, which is still the world’s oldest hairbrush manufacture. Such hairbrushes were made from wood or metal with animal bristles. Those brushes were carefully handcrafted as production made hand stitching of each individual bristle. For this reason, brushes were usually bought and gifted on special occasions.

It took many years, patents and inventions to get where we are now. However, Kent Brushes is still a very traditional company where some models of comb or hairbrushes are still hand made.

What I find fascinating is that they have to honour of holding Royal Warrant for nine consecutive monarchs. That is something truly outstanding, and it might appear to be appealing for a lot of people (including me).

To tell what needs to be said, I will do that in a non-traditional approach. I will quote from the box of the brush itself. Read.

“Perfect clothes care demands a grooming brush. Efficiency in removing dust and gritty particles must be matched by the gentle treatment required by the ever-increasing array of synthetic materials as well as wool, cotton and synthetic fibre mixtures.

Kent quality brushes were first created in London, England in the year 1777. These brushes encompass over 200 years of experience and are the choice of Royalty and the discerning public throughout the world.

Kent’s pursuit of perfection guarantees that you cannot find a better brush. The quality will remain long after the price is forgotten.”

Personally, my first order from Kent Brushes included

  • HANDMADE 110MM POCKET COMB

  • HANDMADE 200MM TAIL COMB

  • CASHMERE CARE DARK WOOD PURE BLACK AND WHITE BRISTLE CLOTHES BRUSH

The first comes in handy when you need or prefer to have a comb with you and thanks to the small size it fits even inner pocket of jackets very nicely.

The second one is a classic comb which I’m using every day in my bathroom. Most comfortable to hold and best when it comes to way how it combs my hair.

And the last brush is something I wanted for a longer time, yet it felt a little bit more expensive to me (clothes brushes are between 22 GBP and 75 GBP). However, it pays off, as I spend some money on the suits and coats I have it is nice to take care of them to preserve their original look as long as possible. Something like a proper hanger or shoe tree when it comes to shoes.

Brush your suit from time to time to get rid of dust or unwanted particles. They will return the favour by you looking fabulous and charming in them all day or all night.

As summary and addition to my first sentence, I would say, owning these combs and brushes as I do now, is an excellent balance between price and what you’ll get. See for yourself - the combs were 4 GBP and 5 GBP. This seems to be an attractive price for that kind of history in your hands. Plus you’re now using the very same combs as the royal family.

Yours sincerely,

Denis
