Lately, you may witness that retro style is coming in pretty fast around us. Firstly we need to establish what I mean by the retro word. Those generously cut double-breasted suits, wider trousers of various lengths, camp or resort collars, knitted shirts or polo shirts with larger collars and more relaxed, looser fit within almost everything. Collars are not under the jacket but stick out like in Gangster movies which takes place in the earlier times. A correct word could be an "old fashioned".

Though I wasn't confident what I think about it for a long time, I only considered single cases first. For example, Maximillian Mogg can undoubtedly wear his old-fashioned Savile row inspired suit which he is creating in his Berlin atelier with a glance and ease as well as Mathias le Févre and his creation from Edward Sexton. Those are appealing as well in terms of style though it is not my style and I probably wouldn't pull them off. And then there are certain cases or people that lack style in my opinion while trying hard to pull out these retro things.

Now I made up my mind a little bit more, and I must say that nowadays I like some elements that belong in the retro category. After all, when you take a look at 60's or 80's movies, characters are not dressed without style but very often good looking. My favourite piece yet is a knitted polo. It usually combines subtle and rich structure with a smart look. Appropriate with a suit, chinos, shorts or swimwear makes it incredibly universal garment piece. Also, in terms of occasions, it is an excellent choice. Except for formal and higher events, you may safely wear it. Considering smart-casual, you may combine it with a jacket for a smooth look or any level below smart-casual won't be a problem either.

Knitted polo can be from a whole range of materials - linen, cotton, cashmere, silk or wool. Linen is the perfect breathable choice for summer, and cashmere or wool is the right choice for the winter season. For a luxurious feel, opt for silk one. If you have a polo with long sleeves, you can use it instead of the sweater over shirt with a tie, then complete with a jacket for a smart look.

Anyway, let's be specific. I already have a cotton knitted t-shirt, which I love to wear when I'm on vacation near the sea. I don't know why, but for some unknown reason, it feels so right. Maybe that is the reason why I decided to enrich my closet with a new knitted polo which I noticed on Suitsupply. Burgundy striped with buttonless placket is 70's inspired and made of cotton (28%) and linen (72%) blend. It allows in a lot of air, which is such an advantage in hot days.

For an outfit, I chose my new sand suit made of linen and cotton, a summer alternative I was looking for quite some time. I especially love the Gurkha trousers. A relaxed look for colder summer evenings, dinners, events through the day or pretty much for your free time as well. This is the way how you can dress it down. And I also give you some hint on what you can look forward to - this new suit is actually a three-piece suit. The kind of summer suit a wanted for a long time, but until now I wasn't sure which one would be the right one. And that will be one of my next posts. In the meantime, I will gladly hear your thoughts on knitted shirts. :)

Yours sincerely,

Denis
